Introduction
Producing a major television series in one of the most remote and demanding environments on earth requires equipment that simply cannot fail.
For the production of Survivor Québec, filmed in the Pearl Islands of Panama, the audio team from Headroom Productions Inc deployed Turtle AV Mineola 8×8 Dante Audio Bridges as part of their outside broadcast audio infrastructure.
Operating in extreme tropical conditions with constant equipment movement, salt air, sand, humidity, and punishing heat, reliability is essential.
For Headroom Productions, the Mineola systems delivered exactly that.
The Challenge of Broadcast Audio on Survivor
Survivor productions operate far from traditional broadcast facilities. Every challenge is essentially a temporary OB environment constructed and dismantled daily.
The Headroom audio team designed a system built around two Turtle AV Mineola 8×8 units connected through Dante audio networking and supported by Netgear M4250 AV Line switches.
One Mineola unit is installed in a field rack positioned close to the game area connected to the main system via fibre. This rack handles program audio feeds, distribution to Sennheiser SR300 transmitters, audio feeds for boom operators, and backup recording paths in case wireless systems fail.
A second Mineola operates in the control room managing audio traffic connected to the production communication system using Riedel Bolero intercom and a Riedel NSA network stream adapter.
Configuration and tuning of the system were handled directly through the Mineola WebUI.
“The WebUI made setting up the audio parameters incredibly straightforward,” said Roxanne, Head of Audio at Headroom Productions. “When you are working in the field you need tools that are quick and intuitive. Being able to configure everything through the browser saved us a lot of time during setup.”
Built for Harsh Environments
Filming Survivor Québec in the Pearl Islands presents some of the most demanding conditions broadcast equipment will ever face.
Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, tides shift more than four meters in a single day, and equipment is transported daily by boat between locations. Gear must survive heat, salt water exposure, humidity, sand, dust, and constant load in and load out cycles.
“Durability and resistance of the equipment is a big concern for us,” said Roxanne from Headroom Productions. “We are talking 40+ degrees Celsius (104+ Fahrenheit), tides of more than four meters in the same day, loading in and loading out every day, bumpy rides in speedboats, sand, dust, humidity and salt water. Mineola never failed once, it was rock solid and reliable for the entire shoot”
“The Mineola gives us a safe point in the system,” Roxanne added. “If something happens elsewhere, we still have the option to record sound without relying entirely on wireless systems.”
Compact Systems for Mobile Production
Compact system design is critical when equipment must be transported constantly between locations.
“The 1U format is really nice,” said Roxanne. “We try to keep everything as compact as possible for transport and the Mineola fits perfectly into our racks.” Low heat output was also important in the tropical environment. “It does not produce much heat at all which is extremely important when racks are sitting in the sun all day.”
Dante Networking Powered by Netgear AV Line
The Dante network connecting the audio infrastructure runs on Netgear M4250 AV Line switches which also proved extremely reliable in the harsh production environment.
“We’ve been a power user of the Netgear AV line for years. We were early adopters,” said Jean‑Sebastien Roy, President of Headroom Productions. “They were life changing products for us. Netgear AV switches just make everything so much faster and easier and I simply can’t speak highly enough of them.”
Production Grade Reliability
For a live reality TV production like Survivor Québec there are no second takes.
Every challenge, every reaction, and every moment from the host must be captured perfectly the first time.
For Headroom Productions, the combination of Turtle AV Mineola 8×8, Dante audio networking, and Netgear AV Line switches delivered the reliability required to keep the show running day after day in the Pearl Islands of Panama.
